So, how can we integrate AI chat bots in education to promote collaboration and skill development of students?
Examining AI chat bots as an innovation in education has been eye-opening, alarming, exciting and overwhelming. Everything I know – values, skills, routines and procedures, knowledge – has been challenged through this reflection.
By researching advantages and disadvantages of AI chat bots, making connection to practice, implementing AI in the classroom, and examining societal buy-in and connection, I realize I am only grazing the surface of artificial intelligence (AI) chat bots.
What was particularly interesting through this reflection task was that despite AI being around for many years, the recent and advanced surge in AI chat bot performance has only recently had people seriously considering how it will change and influence society, including education. The research that is available is in its early stages, and often includes statements like “more research is needed in this area”. Due to the many direct and indirect impacts involving AI, it is a massively complicated innovation that will be ever-evolving and require constant revisions and management to policy and implementation.
This is the final blog post of my Reflections as a Way of Life assignment for PME 811. As I reflect again on my initial Big Question,
"how can we effectively integrate AI (and related technology) in education to promote collaboration and skill development for students?"
it is clear to me that there is ample opportunity to integrate artificial intelligence in education in order to promote collaboration and skill development in students. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages and we need to be proactive versus reactive to the direction technology is headed.
AI CAN Promote Skill Development and Collaboration for Students
As I previously explored, there are many ways AI, specifically chat bots, can be integrated into education to positively impact student skill development. Collaborative learning is positively influenced by AI in the classroom in so many ways including:
Moderating group work and student conversations (Joshi, 2019)
Addressing student learning gaps through specific pinpointing and development of learning plans (Joshi, 2019)
Provide guidance and assessment throughout student inquiry to increase collaboration (Joshi, 2019)
Form balanced groups to improve collaboration (Joshi, 2019)
Foster deeper-learning opportunities (Wang & Liu, 2021)
Assist in planning the collaborative task design (Wang & Liu, 2021)
Act as a support for teacher observation (Wang & Liu, 2021)

For successful integration of AI in education, educators will need:
Regular professional development
An open-minded view and approach to AI
Authentic involvement in implementation process and educational AI design
Awareness of age/grade moderate usage limits/recommendations
No doubt I will continue to reflect on this topic as it continues to evolve and make headlines in the world of education. Since I believe this is not a debate about if we should integrate AI into education, my ongoing reflection and inquiry will include questions like:
How AI be integrated in a way that is safe and values student privacy?
How can we maintain human social needs through collaborating with robots?
What does implementation of AI look like at certain ages considering moderation versus reliance to maintain student health?
How can we ensure educational AI is equitable for societal classes, gender, cultures, and countries?
Over the past week, I listened to a few TED talks, many of them presented by youth, around AI in education. It was interesting to listen to student perspective on the issues after examining my Big Question from the perspective as a teacher. To continue your inquiry into the topic of AI in education, listen to them here:

Has your view on artificial intelligence been challenged? If so, I would love to hear your new take on it.
